Super-powers for everyone

We are seeing athletes like Mads Jonson or Shawn White pushing so hard and going to such height and amplitude and, somehow, the same drive to go further applies to hollywood movies when trying to visually replicate the reality but with super-powers (i.e. Fantastic Fours, the rise of the Silver Surfer or Superman Returns. Having super-powers a thing of the future? It seems that we are almost able to do anything we see in movies...in due time. Take the "Voyage sur la lune" (Travel to the moon, 1902), well, Amstrong did it. Are we going to be able to push our physical limitation far enough so that we can soar through the sky one day like Superman can?

Here is a very inspiring thought made by Steve Jobs: "I think one of the things that really separates us from the high primates is that we're tool builders. I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species on the planet. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. And, humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing, about a third of the way down the list. It was not too proud a showing for the crown of creation. So, that didn't look so good. But, then somebody at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of locomotion for a man on a bicycle. And, a man on a bicycle, a human on a bicycle, blew the condor away, completely off the top of the charts. And that's what a computer is to me. Different aspirations probably but when I went to check out the Thermos Productions web site, I was thrilled by the passion perspire from the material it offers. The teaser has some real nice tricks, plus it’s closer to the riders’ real life. Passion in snowboarding is getting rare these days but riders like Darius Heristchian and Joël Strecker make you rethink about that.

Is nuclear power that bad

The energy content of 1 gram of Uranium is equivalent to approximately 3 tonnes of coal. This means that we need to consume about 3 million times less material with Nuclear Power compared to using Coal or any other Fossil Fuel. This substantially reduces the volumes of fuel and waste of nuclear power compared to Fossil Fuels. Think about that, 3 million times!

What is that number I always dial? Can’t find that printer name anymore and what is the emergency number I have to dial? These are some common questions that you may ask yourself during the day. To find an answer quickly, there is one way that might be worth a try. First you would need do a listing of all phone numbers that you could use during your workday, chat sessions or WoW nights. You may also prepare a picture of your beloved and put all that in a 1024x768 image (or whatever your screen resolution is) of your editing application. Export it to an image format that your OS supports, set it as your wallpaper and with the help of shortcut like window+m on Windows or Exposé on Mac, you’ll have all this data ready for you. Neat.

Road to Les Gets

In the Films section you’ll find a new micro movie made to show the trip from Gaillard (a small French town next to Geneva) to Les Gets in the winter season. But before you start downloading the flick, consider not taking any heavy meal because the ride is likely to make your heart go up and down. The one-hour trip has been squeezed down to 4 minutes and half, so prepare your brain to see fast moving images. Enjoy.

Got enough iPod?

What I like about Apple is that, unlike some people, never deceive me. I went out to buy myself a brand new 30gig iPod. Yes, the one with the video functionality. It’s great. First off, I started thinking, -why on earth, would people buy the 60gigs version? Well, as soon as I muscle-converted all my divx snowboard videos, a couple of Smallville episodes ripped from the DVD and finally a touch of hot movie trailers, I ended up with a different perspective on my assumption of having way to much space on my new gadget. Conclusion, buy the bigger one if you can afford it. It’s worth it when you are in some remote places and feel the urge to watch Van Damme’s Bloodsport.

ShoeGolf at Pulp 68

Times to times I like to visit Jim’s shop, Pulp 68, it’s full of vintage products, collectors sneakers shoes, unlikely goods and of course all the arsenal of regular skate/snowshop merchandise. But this time Jim had something else to propose, shoegolfing. As he explained the rules, which basically consist in throwing your shoe to a defined area through an urban fairway, he defined the tee line and set the “hole”. Wicked time we had playing the game. Man-made diamonds are forever

Imagine that the man-made diamond production would be easy as making bakery...That’s what Apollo diamonds are seeking to do. Now, making the diamonds market collapse because of to much offering might not be the goal of this Boston based company. It’s more about making a big step into a next era. There was the steel era, silicone era and will maybe live long enough to see the diamond age. When you think of diamond, you probably think of jewelry, well that’s nice; especially if you’re into Bling-Bling but scientist will think more of the like mighty laser, hyper fast computer chips mounted on diamond wafers. Current iPods holds 10'000 songs, how about a diamond video iPod holding 10'000....movies. Want even an even more wicked application for those industrially made diamonds? How about lasers that can be used like a camera flash for spy satellites. Great for bustin’ those kinky sessions in the woods.

Handheld gaming galore

That’s it, I played games two or three hours straight like I use to when I was a kid equipped with my super-famicom. But this time it’s with the new sony’s gizmo, the PSP. At first sight the little technology wonder seems to be a nice pleasant gaming tool but to be used solo; I quickly came to realize that once you hook it up to Amaryllis and Kaid, two application that’ll help you connect your PSP to a community of gamers, you’ll feel the great excitation by, let say, casually playing a tournament of wipeout with people from all over good mother earth. It works, really. Sure, there is the painful system set-up that can be a little tortuous but when you got it figured out, you can just walk around your apartment while racing some guy in Dublin or New-York. Wicked.

Burton turns up the heat with Vapor

Burton relaunched their website with the 2006 season gear. As usual, you’ll find plenty of premium goods including the board Vapor. Burton claims it is the lightest board ever made with at least 800 grams off compared with any other board in the line. With a freeridin’ program, the Vapor boasts aerospace materials. It comes in three different sizes, 154/157/160. Unfortunately for my 11.5 sized feet, and me the sidecut won’t let me even consider it. Burton, how about a Baron with a Vapor core?

Superman Returns (but needs somewhere to crash)

After watching consecutively 4 seasons of Smallville starring the talented Tom Welling, who would have thought that they would cast at total newbie like Brandon Routh ? Well, at least there is Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) but it doesn’t look like he’s going to be bold by the look of the Press kit. bummer. You can at least look forward for the story that seems to have a rational follow-up in the Superman’s mythology. This is not a remake of the original Superman with the famous and charismatic Christopher Reeves and it’s worth going to see if we can forget about Smallville for a while. The movie is being slated for June 2006.

PSP - New TV server service

Sony just launched the first phase of a new service which will provide Japanese PSP owners downloadable video content. They will soon move to paid-for TV episodes. Apparently, this service requires the most recent upgrade of the firmware (2.0) available only in Japan at the moment. I’d love to go a Parisian coffee bar equipped with a 20Mb/s bandwith Wi-Fi and download the latest Smallville episode or watch the latest TV News. Peaceful Warrior Movie

The book written by Dan Millman, The Peaceful Warrior, the book that change lives (and did change mine in a positive and drastic way 10 years ago now) is taken to the big screen and due later this year or early next year. Nick Nolte will star as Socrates, Scott Mechlowicz (Eurotrip, Mean Creek) as Dan, and Amy Smart (Butterfly Effect) as Joy. Dan Millman writes « Inspired by and (loosely) based upon the book, the film was directed by Victor Salva ("Powder") and produced by Sobini Films. I offered some notes and suggestions for the script, some of which were incorporated, others not ». Let’s us all hope that this movie will also be a movie that change lives and can live up to the film we all made our self while reading the book. Message to Dan if he reads that news: Can I be the French voice for Dan?

Order 66

Warning, if you haven’t watched Episode III yet stop right here before I start the spoil, you’ll come back later. Now, for the rest of us, here is my take on the final brick stone of George Lucas sixtology. I definitely have some grief about the whole movie plot (if that word still applies) but have just been bluffed who everything snaps perfectly into place when the Emperor issues order 66. Tetris perfect. This really gave me chills every time the holographic message went across the different clone troops. And so much detail in this movie, such attention to every inch and all textures is remarkable. I was also a bit surprised how really evil Darth Vader is; he is killing kids cold blooded. That makes me reconsider my perspective on the personage. Movie worth seeing twice.

I guess some of the most literate audience here will have heard about Podcasting. This truly is the new way to listen to radio. Set-up your podcast application like iPodder and subscribe to, let say, Couleur 3 feed and you’re ready to have fresh content every day on your iPod. This adds new flavor to already owned sound often-listened in loops. For those of you who feel a bit disconnected of new grooves that are launched on FM, this is the opportunity to catch up on new sound.

IBM's Answer to spam

IBM, one of my favorite big corp, announced that it is developing a new spam filtering technology that would actually send back the mail to the spammer. How cool is that. A nice touch would also include a nice little header in the mail with something like “you’ve been owned, dude”, but that might not happen. The technology called FairUCE (which stands for "Fair use of Unsolicited Commercial Email") is a spam filter that stops spam by verifying sender identity instead of filtering content. The techniques spammers use to get past content filters become laughable, because FairUCE doesn't look at what they say, only at who they are. It virtually eliminates spoofed addresses, phishing, and even many viruses with a few cached DNS look-ups and a couple of if/else statements. Sender identity is the spam-fighting tool of the future. The author of this technology went from over 400 spams a day to just one or two. Can’t wait to have this one installed my machine.

Puma Bessier

The word at Puma is that they are distilling 500 pairs of sneakers with the sickest style called Bessier. The upper part is the traditional shape that you see everyday in your street but the twist is the sole itself surrounded with wicked fangs. Wesley Snipes could be wearing those in the next Blade if they weren’t apparently so hard to get. I sent a quick email to the random Puma email address, which will probably be destroyed before human eyes can read my request but if anyone at Puma can read this, I need a pair (size 12 will do great).

Challenged by PHP

As you might notice if you are regular visitor of the PRISM website, the header pattern changed and you will be kindly asked to answer the quick poll at the bottom of this same page. Designing the poll engine was a bit of a challenge. I don’t usually give up easily on things and if you want to learn and use PHP that’s just what you need, persistency that is. That quick poll took me about a week to create; well actually it only took me a few hours once I figured out how to use the GD Library, component of PHP that manipulates images dynamically. Some of you will tell me that you can find already made scripts that can take care of that. True, but that’s not what it’s all about. It’s about that intense satisfaction (that last for about a fraction of a second) when you manage to capture the solution of the logic behind the PHP language. That’s what it’s all about, learning and understanding.

DJ QBert, all powerful king of scratch, will be in Lausanne on the 1st of April, so will I. My buddy DJ Rich will do his first part and that’s no April fool. Challenged by PHP

As you might notice if you are regular visitor of the PRISM website, the header pattern changed and you will be kindly asked to answer the quick poll at the bottom of this same page. Designing the poll engine was a bit of a challenge. I don’t usually give up easily on things and if you want to learn and use PHP that’s just what you need, persistency that is. That quick poll took me about a week to create; well actually it only took me a few hours once I figured out how to use the GD Library, component of PHP that manipulates images dynamically. Some of you will tell me that you can find already made scripts that can take care of that. True, but that’s not what it’s all about. It’s about that intense satisfaction (that last for about a fraction of a second) when you manage to capture the solution of the logic behind the PHP language. That’s what it’s all about, learning and understanding.
